August 19, 2020: Pier 39 Sea Lions, San Francisco

Pier 39 is a popular tourist attraction on San Francisco’s waterfront — a large wood pier with a variety of interesting shops, restaurants and attractions.

Located on the west side of Pier 39 are floating rafts that are home to more than 100 sea lions (the number fluctuates a lot, depending on the season).  The sea lions are a relatively new addition to the San Francisco scene, arriving in 1989.  After the Loma Prieta earthquake, people started moving their boats away, freeing up space for sea lions to hang out and rest between periods of swimming and hunting.   There are lots of fish nearby, so life is good.

Pier 39 is currently still closed, but has this small nice carousel our kids used to enjoy.

And there are still a few boats that dock nearby, always a nice scene just before sunset.
