Often enough when we talk about street art, we’re talking about murals, grafitti and the like. But there’s another sort as well, where the artists take to the streets for live performance. There’s a line somewhere, though I can’t define it, between them and buskers—but does it matter?
In any case, the earnest pianist above is Ralph Kiefer, playing on a side street just off Munich’s central Marienplatz, playing a mix of light classics, show tunes and pop. He’s quite good, and attracted a fair-sized audience.
But our other artist of the day takes it up a step from that. He’s Norbert Jaschke, and he calls himself an ‘action artist’ who creates ‘living pictures,’ although in this picture he’s actually taking a lunch break with a sandwich. When he’s not at lunch, he’s part of the scene you see spread before you, made of what he calls the ‘time-worked elements of civilization, clay, dust, sand, chalk, wood and plants as well as color pigments.’
His works are sometimes solo, other times with as many as eight other performers. He’s based in Berlin and has been working on these projects since 1996. If you’re interested in more, here’s a link!
