Toronto’s Pearson International Airport has won a 2020 Environmental Achievement Award from the Airports Council International for cutting its greenhouse gas emissions by 60% from 2006 levels.
The airport’s strategies for reducing its impact on climate change included providing low-impact electric power to keep aircraft from running engines while parked, replacing high-energy lights with banks of LEDs, replacing gas-powered shuttles with electric vehicles and working with airlines to reduce idling time at gates.
About half the reduction in gases came from the airport’s own efforts, with the other half resulting from Ontario’s cleaning up its power supply to produce electricity with lower emissions.
