The past few months have shown that there is no limit to ingenuity in adapting many aspects of normal life to the pandemic era, but this one may have gone just the little bit extra: A drive-through haunted house that brings terror up close and personal.
The Tokyo attraction was created by Kowagarasetai, a production company whose name translates to Scare Squad. In it, patrons pass through in their own cars, avoiding contact with non-family members, but ironically much closer to the performers than in a ‘normal’ haunted house.
A cast member explained to reporters that “We have started this drive-in because we cannot get close to customers” at a traditional haunted house. “But the distance has actually gotten shorter since there is only a window between them.” Zombies attack the cars, smearing them with ‘blood’ and shrieking.
Unlike a traditional haunted house, there is no escape. Because customers are in their cars and can only go forward, there’s no way out until the show is over after a 13-minute performance.
