Located near the entrance to the rural Alberta town of Vulcan is a work of art that most people will recognize. It’s a copy of the starship USS Enterprise, made famous by the classic Star Trek television series from the 1960s. That series stimulated the imagination of many generations and spawned numerous related movies and television series.
The town of Vulcan—named long before Star Trek was even imagined by Gene Roddenberry—considers itself the Official Star Trek Capital of Canada and hosts an annual mid-summer Star Trek Celebration called Spock Days.
The town’s model of the Enterprise is about 25 feet long and weighs 5 tons. It was unveiled in 1995. The ship’s numbers” FX6-1995-A” are explained as follows: FX6 is the Vulcan airport identifier; 1995 is the year of its creation; A signifies the first project launched in pursuit of Science and Trek theme in Canada.
Greetings in a number of languages, including English, Klingon and Vulcan are present on the pedestal at the base of the starship.
