It took Matthieu Bonne, a 26-year-old who certainly deserves his self-description as an extreme sports enthusiast, just under 24 hours to swim the entire coast of Belgium, from the French border north.
The 67-kilometre journey actually meant swimming at an average pace above 3 kilometres an hour, because for a good part of the time he made little distance while swimming against ocean currents to earn money for charities. He was followed by a boat that provided snacks every 20 minutes and light during the night portion of the swim.
On his social media, Bonne described “possibly the most amazing moment” when he swam past his home town at 2 am, to the cheers of supporters on the beach. On Instagram, he posted, “No words can describe what went through my head at that moment.”
