St Michaels’ Basilica is located on a hill in the former town of Chatham, now within the City of Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada. It’s one of the largest churches in Eastern Canada and its Gothic architecture dominates the area.
A former church burned down in 1878. St Michael’s church was designed by Patrick Charles Keely of Brooklyn but it wasn’t until 1903 that construction began. The church was built under the direction of Bishop Barry. Stones were locally quarried from Millbank and French Fort Cove and transported across the river by parishioners. The first service was held in 1907 in the basement. It wasn’t completed until 1922.
Although the church was closed when we visited , its outside details and view of the Miramichi River were well worth the visit.
