5 European Road Trips You Should Take in Your Lifetime

(content by Sonai)

In our everyday life, we commute from one place another and see this commute as a never-ending chore. It doesn’t have to be this way.

Road trips can be a brilliant way to take a break from your daily routine and just drive, take in the landscape, and enjoy the route. But keep in mind that roads are not equal, road trip routes are not equal either.

This article aims to provide guidance on which routes to take in the EU for maximum therapeutic effects and minimal hassle. Starting from Trollstigen, a scenic stretch of mountains roads in the Rauma region of Norway, to a circumnavigation of Iceland that is about 800-miles.

Here are 5 European road trips you should take in your lifetime.

  • Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse in Austria

Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse is the preferred route for motorcycle and sports car enthusiasts due to its high airplane roads. These roads pass through Hohe Tauern National Park that not only provides stunning views but also gives a seemingly never-ending view over a mountain range.

This mountain range consists of 37 mountains with roads that climb these mountains up to 2504 meters. For the enthusiasts, the tire squealing hairpin bends on these roads is one of the main attractions.

  • Verdon Gorge Circuit In France

One of the most seductive regions of France in Provence and Verdon Gorge Circuit presents it in the best form.

On this route, you will find a sensual abundance of little market towns. This route takes you through the spiritual splendor and natural grandeur of how man has accommodated both in centuries.

The trip includes a rise and fall, not in the scenery, but in the elevation of the road. Rising gently in the beginning and taking a sharp turn to steepers road near villages like Tourtour. This phenomenon also continues in the actual location of Verdon Gorge, which is sometimes called the Grand Canyon of Europe.

  • Romantische Strasse In Germany

The route of Romantische is loaded with fairy-tale castles, imposing walled towns, palaces, and several natural wonders. This route has truly earned its position on this list. From the outset, at Wurttemberg’s Residenz there is a lot of architectural romance to be seen.

On this route, you will find the picturesque wine village of Tauberbischofsheim. After that, the spa town of Bad Mergentheim. Further after that, the moated castle at Weikersheim. The list goes on.

  • Route One In Iceland

What could be more extreme than a road trip involving travel near volcanoes? There aren’t many landscapes that come close to the extremes of Iceland’s volcanoes, ash deserts, lava fields, geysers, and hot springs.

Route One road circumnavigates the entire Island with all these spectacles. Due to the nature of the Island, it wasn’t possible to build roads in some areas until 1974. Some parts of the route remain unfinished even today, so be prepared to drive on gravel for a small portion of the trip.

  • North Coast 500 In Scotland

For a genuine piece of Scottish Highlands life together with spectacular views, the North Coast 500 is the perfect route.

The route is 500 miles of the circular trip which skirts the top of the UK. It captures all the romance and mysticism of the region. On this route, more than the route itself, it is the stops that make this road trip one of the best you can ever take.

A short walk outside Ullapool and you can peer into the horizon for incredible views across the Outer Hebrides and Skye. If you take the road south of Wick you will find the Grey Cairns of Camster which is a 5000-year-old burial site. For those who dare, it is also possible to crawl inside the burial chambers.

On this route, there are castle ruins, caves of old smugglers, emerald lochs, and several distilleries. There are not many routes that go through the heart of a country’s heritage like the North Coast 500 does.

Personal Security Tips

Before traveling, you should write a list of essential things to take with you. But first of all, you should think about online security, especially when accessing public Wi-Fis. The best solution to protect your online privacy and security is using a VPN. Besides that, when using a VPN on any of your devices, you can easily find the best local places to eat and search about the history of the area. If you still don’t know what a VPN is, it’s the perfect time to find out.

Be sure to pack your bags with essentials for a road trip, and let’s get into the adventure!
