A small Spanish village has turned itself into an outdoor museum of mystery with over 100 illusions painted on its walls, perhaps one of the world’s largest displays of trompe l’oeil, or in Spanish, ‘trampantojos’ paintings.
Romangordo, in Extremadura, have turned the town into a tourist draw, bringing more visitors every year, with 46,000 visitors last year. Isabel Martin, the town’s tourism officer, though, says “And that’s just the people who came and registered at the tourism office.”
The project was started by a local resident who was studying art in Madrid and brought classmates to help, and then attracted other artists from around Extremadura. For a gallery of more images, click here
