Swan River is a small town of a few thousand residents in east-central Manitoba, north of Dauphin. I have an uncle and aunt who live here and we’d often visit them when I was a child. While much of Manitoba is completely flat, the topography around Swan River is slightly hilly and forested. There’s a lot of good farmland around, although being further north the growing season is shorter and it’s harder for farmers to bring in the crops before winter descends.
It had been 20 years since I had last visited Swan River and this time found a gigantic swan greeting visitors. I enjoy discovering local ‘landmarks’ like this when on a road trip.
