Originally from Ceylon, you can now find these birds in many parts of Asia including India, Pakistan and the Middle East. Indian ring-necked parakeets are also known as rose-winged parakeets and are noisy squawking birds, as are most parrots. They are a non-migratory species .
In the wild, rose-ringed parakeets usually feed on fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Wild flocks will fly several miles to forage in farms and orchards and can cause significant crop damage.
Adult males have red beaks, black facial markings, and three bands of color around their necks. Females lack the facial markings and collar bands, although some display a slight darkening of color around their necks. You can contrast the coloration of male and female birds in the photos below.
These parakeets are commonly kept as household pets in Asia. Captive individuals can be taught to speak.
