Don’t look down if your legs turn to jelly in high places: Portugal’s new 516 Arouca bridge is not only the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the world, it’s also 575 feet from the walkway to the ground. It’s opening soon if you want to start your mental prep.
The new bridge, connecting the gorge to the Aguieiras Waterfall is seventy feet longer than Switzerland’s Charles Kuonen Bridge, opened in 2017. There are longer bridges in China, including one at 1,726 feet, but their glass-bottom construction puts them in a different category.
This bridge, about an hour away from Porto and suspended from two v-shaped towers, is a true suspension span. It will take about 5-10 minutes to walk across its steel-mesh walkway. If you don’t panic in the middle…
Count me out.
Sorry – cant look at the photo – my legs have gone wobbly !
