Visiting an Orchid Nursery, Costa Rica

Orchids are the national flower of Costa Rica.  Some 1400 species of orchids grow in the country of which about 20% are endemic (found only here).  Orchids are a popular crop for export.  It’s likely that some of the orchids you’ve purchased began their life in Costa Rica.

While heading from Monteverde to the Pacific Coast, we stopped at a nursery growing orchids for export.  I didn’t catch the name of it, but we were given time to explore the shaded space and take photos.  The nursery covered several acres.
