A small but interesting spot to visit in Vulcan, Alberta, is Bell Park. The park derives its name from the bell you can see in the photo below.
Today the park is most famous because it’s here that you’ll find a bust of Mr. Spock of Star Trek fame. I thought the bust was a rather good likeness and the display is complete with Leonard Nimoy’s hand-print giving the famous Vulcan hand salute.
Leonard Nimoy developed a special friendship with the town, supporting their failed attempt to premier a Star Trek movie and lobbying for the town to receive recognition as “the Star Trek capital of Canada”. A very special moment for the town was when Leonard Nimoy came to Vulcan in 2010 for the unveiling of the bust, which you can see below in a photo from the town’s Visitor Center’s “Spock Wall”.
Mr. Nimoy received a homecoming hero’s welcome, complete with parade and a key to the town. A large crowd was on hand to greet him, likely most of the town’s population.
Below is a short videoclip of this visit.
Vulcan fondly remembers Leonard Nimoy….
