Madrid is known for three of Europe’s top art museums—the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofia—but a recent survey by TheLocal.es points to a variety of other museums definitely worth a look.
They include some major art collections, including that of the Palacio de Liria, a vast private art collection that’s only recently been regularly opened to the public; the Museo Cerralbo, formerly the home of the 17th Marquis, and an exhibit itself aside from its artworks and, in a smaller home, the Museo Sorolla. The museum is in the former family home of Spain’s impressionist/realist master of the late 19th century, and houses a large number of his works.
The list isn’t limited to art: it also includes a robot museum, a subway museum housed in a former station, and even a museum dedicated to Ratoncito Perez, the rodent who does for Spanish kids what the Tooth Fairy does in America.
