The three faces in this fountain, called “The Swimming Mermaids,” represent the three small rivers that provide Munich’s water supply—the Mangfall, the Schlierach and the Leitzach.
It’s the work of German sculptor Andreas Schwarzkopf, and was installed in 1965 in the courtyard of the Stadtmuseum or City Museum. It’s not Munich’s only tribute to its water supply; it’s also honored at the Fischbrunnen in nearby Marienplatz.
