England has a new treat for serious cyclists and history buffs: King Alfred’s Way, a 350km bicycle route that circles Wessex, passing through forests, coastal areas and some cities, starting and ending at King Alfred’s statue in Winchester.
The route, officially opened in August is well-supplied along its route with pubs and B&Bs that hope to take advantage of the route as it becomes better known.
Because it is circular, it’s possible to start or end at any point along the line. At 350km, it could be either a single 5-day ride, or be taken in pieces. Access to the trail can also take advantage of rail access at numbers of stations at points along the way.

43 miles a day is a wonderful cycle ride. England is criss-crossed with cycle lanes. And plenty of economy camping and hostels along each route. A favourite with families for a safe vacation.
