At the site, you can see the wreckage of the Machault, a French 26-gun military ship and learn more about the last naval battle between the French and British for possession of North American territory. It also shows the life of the sailors at at time.

The Battle of Restigouche was a naval battle fought in 1760 between the British and the French Navy, Acadian militia and Mi’kmaq militias. The French vessels were sent to resupply troops in New France after the fall of Quebec.

The battle was very hard fought and ended with all of the French ships and most of the Acadians’ boats sunk. The British were not successful in landing at the end of the battle. The Acadian militia and  the Mi’kmaq had made a last stand and survived.  A lot of Acadian settlers were forced out and settled elsewhere. By the next year the Mi’kmaq and  First Nations had made treaties promising peace and trade with Britain.

Without provisions from French ships , Montreal  fell.  And the loss of those French ships was the end of any serious attempts by the French to hold their colonies in North America.
