If Venice can never seem to decide whether it loves or hates its status as one of the world’s tourism icons, the current pandemic is giving it reasons to at least make some short-term decisions, such as postponing the start of its day-tripper tax to 2022.
The city councilor in charge of budget issues announced that “In light of the current situation, linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have decided to make a big gesture to help encourage the return of tourists.”
The tax, aimed largely at cruise visitors and day-trippers who don’t pay the city’s tax on overnight lodging, was due to go into effect January 1st. The tax is supposed to be used to help cover the costs of keeping the city clean and to restore damage caused by overtourism.
