Turnagain Pass is located between Seward and Anchorage, in the northeastern part of the Kenai Peninsula. While of relatively low elevation (900 ft), it’s the highest point on the Seward Highway and because of its northerly location is a subalpine environment.
The pass is a popular stopping point for people traveling the Seward Highway, and the scenery is very nice. A few hiking trails criss-cross the pass, but the place is most popular in the winter and is frequented by snowshoers, skiers, and snowmobilers. It’s also part of the Iditarod dog sled race. Avalanches are common during the long winter and pose a real risk.
