JAL offers a no-meal option

Japan Airlines is offering some passengers a no-meal option on its flights, hoping to avoid wasted food and extra expense by preparing meals only for those who want them.

Part of what the airline calls its ‘Ethical Choice’ initiative, the plan offers the opportunity to opt out of inflight catering during booking or by calling the airline, similar to the process for asking for a special diet meal.

The option, which is available in all classes, is aimed at passengers who may either want to sleep through the food service or bring their own food on board. Those who pass on the food will receive a JAL-branded amenity kit.
