Viking Statue, Gimli

The town of Gimli was founded by immigrants from Iceland more than a hundred years ago and even today is the largest Icelandic community in Manitoba.  It’s located on the shore of Lake Winnipeg and has a rich fishing tradition.

01 Viking Statue, Giml

One of the most popular tourist stops in Gimli is the town’s Viking statue.  The 15 foot (4.6 m) fiberglass statue was unveiled during Canada’s Centennial in 1967.  Fifty years later it was refurbished and moved to a new more spacious park where you can visit it today.
