Manchester is getting a new face at its airport and new connections to the U.S., with flights starting in May pending U.S. approval. Tickets will be on sale next week for flights to New York, Boston and Orlando.
The three routes were previously flown from Manchester by Thomas Cook Airlines, which went belly-up a year ago September. Manchester has lost a number of other overseas flights in recent years, with American Airlines dropping its route from New York and just recently from Philadelphia.
At present, Virgin Atlantic has had routes to New York and Orlando, but Boston is a new link for Manchester. British Airways dropped the Manchester to New York route ten years ago. Aer Lingus, positioned as a lower-cost carrier within IAG, parent of both Aer Lingus and British Airways, has been looking to establish a UK base to expand its trans-Atlantic offerings.
