Water Palace and Roadside Market, Jaipur

The lovely “Water Palace” (Jal Mahal), constructed in 1750, sits in the middle of Lake Sagar in Jaipur.  It’s a symmetrical building constructed of pink sandstone that looks like it’s about to float away.  The palace was built as a duck shooting lodge for the Maharajah.

Only a single story sits above the lake level but apparently there are four submerged levels, their stone walls holding back the lake water as they have for 250 years.

You can’t visit the palace but can view it from the shores of Lake Sagar.  Efforts are underway to restore and enhance the structure and cleanup the lake.  The palace is apparently going to re-open as an upscale restaurant.

There’s a thriving market in the palace view parking lot.  It seemed to specialize in shoe vendors, although a variety of items were available for sale.
