Summer job opening on Irish island

If you’re looking for a summer job in Ireland, here’s one that will be advertised soon, but you’ll need to move fast: last summer’s two openings drew 40,000 applicants when it was advertised on line.

The caretaker jobs on remote Great Blasket Island are being offered by aa couple who own three cottages and a coffee shop on the island, which is very scenic but lacks a few mod cons, such as hot running water and electricity. It’s three miles off the coast of County Kerry and is noted for diverse plant, animal and sea life.

The owners are looking for a couple or a pair of friends to take on the jobs, and would be open to applications from overseas—once Covid is no longer an issue. They will also be adding some specific qualifications to the listing this year; last year’s flood of applications took them a month to go through. They told the Irish Independent that “It’s absolutely fantastic that so many people want to come here but many didn’t realise what the living conditions are like.”
