This monument is located in beautiful Washington Square, one of 5 green spaces in old Philadelphia. It’s part of Independence National HIstorical Park.
In 1954, the Washington Square Planning Committee decided to construct a monument to honor the thousands of soldiers who died during the American Revolutionary War. The monument includes a bronze of Washington as the monument’s centerpiece. It was completed in 1957 and includes an eternal flame and the remains of a soldier, one of many who are buried in the square.
Washington Square is just a block from Independence Hall and a popular recreational spot for residents and visitors alike.
