London to get a ‘highline’ park

An abandoned stretch of elevated railway that connects London’s Camden area to an area near the Kings Cross station is being proposed as a New York-style Highline Park, to be called the Camden Highline. The group that’s pushing the proposal even hired the same team of architects to come up with a design.

Next steps include getting a concrete plan, getting community approval, getting government approval and getting an estimated £35 million to build it for a planned opening in 2024.

What is already has is enthusiasm and an endorsement from London Mayor Sadiq Khan who said “Camden Highline has the potential to become a really important new asset for the local community.  This is exactly the sort of innovative, environmentally sustainable and locally-driven project which could make an important contribution to London’s recovery from the pandemic.”

Another thing it has, which neither New York’s Highline nor Paris’s Promenade Plantée have, is a live train running on the rest of the viaduct that will become the park. Among the architects’ challenges will be to make the next-door trains part of the scenery and ambience without dominating it.
