Everglades City: Airboats, Gators and a Hike

We had an interesting day in Everglades City in Florida. It’s on the Gulf side of the state. Lots of interesting architecture in the city but the main draw is the Everglades, a 1.5-million-acre wetlands preserve of Florida.

We started off our day there taking an airboat tour.  On the day we went, there were too many boats to see much wildlife, but riding fast on one of the boats is a blast. You learn about the fishing industry there and hear some fun stories.

After the airboat ride, we went for a hike along a nearby canal. Depending on time of year and tide level, location of where a lot of wildlife is spotted changes. Ask at a local business or the The Gulf Coast Visitor Center.

Living in Florida, I’ve seen plenty of alligators. They normally show little interest in people. Could of been me being paranoid, but I sensed them keeping an eye on us on our hike so we kept plenty of distance and ended our hike early. As we later thought about it, the gators probably were fed by tourists and looking for food, reason for the signs.
