Bike sales were up nearly 10% in the Netherlands last year, with half of the new bikes powered by electricity rather than pure leg power. E-bike sales were up 30% from the year before.
Amazingly, in a country that already has over 22 million bikes for its 17 million people, sales totaled 1.1 million new bikes in 2020.
A large part of the bump in sales could be attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic which led to many people avoiding public transit and taking their leisure time closer to home, according to industry organizations. The high sales were achieved despite some supply disruptions caused by intermittent lockdowns.
