Italy, which last September pioneered the first flights that required negative Covid tests before boarding, is now about to try the same idea on some of its high-speed trains.
Starting in April, Trenitalia, the state rail operator, will launch a ‘Covid-free’ service on its most heavily-traveled route, between Rome and Milan. All staff and passengers will be required to have a current negative Covid test. Like the flights, 30-minute swab tests will be available.
If the service proves successful, it will be extended to other popular routes such as Naples, Florence and Venice. It’s hoped that the idea will help restart tourism and leisure travel once restrictions are lifted; for now, leisure travel is banned in Italy.
