While traveling south of San Jose in Costa Rica, we stopped at a nice lakeside spot for lunch. After lunch we wandered around the landscaped grounds and as we headed to our van, noticed this palm tree with the typical oropendola bird nests hanging down from the tips of the fronds.
Looking more closely at the tree we noticed a slight irregularity on the left side of the trunk. Zooming on this with our cameras we saw that it was a hornet’s nest. The hornets were quite active and we were warned that they had a bad temper and a painful bite. So we decided it was best just to study them at a distance.
An impressive piece of camouflage.
