Signs of Rapid City

Rapid City is the second largest city in South Dakota and is located in the western part of the state, on the eastern slopes of the beautiful and interesting Black Hills.  Its greatest claim to fame probably is its proximity to the Mount Rushmore National Monument, and it’s often called “City of Presidents”.

The city took root as a result of the Gold Rush in the Black Hills in the 1870s, and it is a growing and thriving community.  We visited last fall and spent a day walking around the city’s downtown.  As I’m prone to do, I photographed many old and interesting signs which form the core of this post.  Of course, there’s a lot of building going on and new signs are popping up.

I always find signs reflect the character of a community.  Here are some that caught my eye in Rapid City:
