Let me start by saying “No, this is not a gas station that was converted to a cafe.” It’s a fairly-recent purpose-built restaurant in a strip mall in Oceanside, California.
But a lot of effort has gone into making it look like a recycled garage, and it’s not just the signs on the walls and the old license plates, not even the tables made out of old rims, nor the big Chrysler sitting in the middle of the dining room.
Whoever did this went all the way down to the epoxy-painted concrete floor that gives it that really authentic perfection.
It was all the more startling to me, because we stopped there right after visiting the nearby Mission of San Luis Rey and its 200-year-old grounds and buildings. Oh, and by the way: the food was quite good!
