With tourism destinations all over the world cranking up their publicity machines with reminders of why you wanted to go there, and hopefully still do, New York City is offering a tangible reminder: a break on the cost of a room.
The hotel industry was one of the city’s hardest-hit sectors, with occupancy down by 90% last year. That was the result of a double whammy—not only were visitors restricted from traveling, but business travel collapsed as well.
The tax, 5.875% on top of the hotel’s own rate, may not seem like a big deal, but even a budget room in New York isn’t cheap, and saving almost 6% off the top of whatever deals the hotels are offering is not to be sneezed at! The break will expire August 31.
