Denmark’s parliament has given final approval to a fifty-year project to build a new one-square-mile island at the entrance of Copenhagen’s harbor with the intent of both providing new housing and, primarily, protecting the harbor from future storm surges.
To be called Lynetteholm, the bulk of the island’s foundation is to be in place by 2035, with completion by 2070. The plans include a dam system around its perimeter and a new neighborhood with metro stations.
But that construction may yet be thrown off schedule by continued opposition by environmental groups that have raised concerns about the island’s effect on the movement of salt and sediments in the area. They have also claimed that the construction would put 340 truckloads a day of building material passing through Copenhagen.
