Passengers headed for a landing at Australia’s Sydney airport could be forgiven a little gulp or a panic if they’re looking down as the plane lands. Clear as day, and in ten-foot high letters, the sign below them proclaims ‘Welcome to Perth.’
Perth, to save you grabbing a map, is a five-hour flight away from Sydney, on Australia’s west coast. It’s a little bigger than missing your stop and having to take the next train back. But not to worry, it’s only a joke. A big one.
The owner of the building complex that hosts the sign told Traveller, part of the Sydney Morning Herald, that “Our complex is directly under the flight path and we always see planes flying above so I thought ‘it’s a bit of a laugh, why not?'” Not totally original; Traveller pointed out that a house in Milwaukee has sported a ‘Welcome to Cleveland’ sign since 1978.
The real surprise for Brad Heasman, the owner, was that it took three months before someone noticed the sign and posted it to social media.
