China seems these days to be the world’s leader in headline-making, not to say stomach-churning, vertigo-inducing bridges, but the Ruyi Bridge in Zhejiang Province is so unusual that some early commentators were sure it was just a PhotoShop trick.
But it isn’t, as this video makes very, and scarily, clear. The structure is actually a melange of three bridges, with several glass-bottomed sections 140 metres above a canyon. Originally thought to be too far-fetched when the design was picked, it’s turned out to be quite popular.
And in case you’re planning to check out all of China’s feature bridges, leave yourself plenty of time. There are over 2300 tourist-view bridges, many with glass walkways or slides. And, there are also the tallest glass bridge in the world, the longest sea-crossing bridge, three of the world’s four longest suspension bridges and the world’s longest suspension glass bridge.
