Old Strathcona is a historic district south of downtown Edmonton. More than a century ago Strathcona was a municipality separate from Edmonton, but they’ve long been merged into one community.
The old commercial district of Strathcona has transformed in recent years and is now Edmonton’s most trendy neighborhood — the place to be (except during CoVid, when I visited, when hardly anyone was there). In 2007, Old Strathcona was named a Provincial Historic Area.
Old Strathcona is centered on Whyte Avenue and stretches many blocks in any direction. It is home to many of Edmonton’s arts and entertainment facilities. Here you’ll find a large variety of restaurants, bars and shops of all types. Whyte Avenue is a great place to walk, enjoy the historic buildings (like the Princess Theater and Strathcona Hotel), window shop and people watch.
The district has lots of signs which, as many of you know, I enjoy photographing. I always find that signs tell a lot about a destination. Here’s some of what I saw in Old Strathcona:
(Had never heard of Escape Rooms before, but they’re a real thing)
(A clever take on Queen….)
