New York’s oldest museum is about to expand its building to make room for New York’s newest, with the American LGBTQ+ Museum moving into a new wing to be built at the New York Historical Society.
The expansion, which will include 70,000 square feet of galleries, classrooms and library storage, will be built on a vacant lot on Manhattan’s 76th street, next to the the Historical Society’s building which faces Central Park. The society bought the lot in 1937, but has not previously found a permanent use for it. The building is expected to open in 2024.
The connection between the oldest and newest museums goes back a few years; the Historical Society has hosted a number of LGBTQ history exhibitions over the past few years.
