Avianca plans big return to U.S.

Colombia-based South American airline Avianca, forced into bankruptcy last year, is making a big push to reestablish itself as a major carrier between Latin America and the U.S., with a list of 23 new and restored routes.

The routes, from five different South and Central American countries, will strengthen Star Alliance connections with the area once they are fully implemented; Avianca didn’t give start dates or details. The airline has not yet emerged from bankruptcy, and the new routes are part of its exit plan.

The new routes originate in Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Guatemala and El Salvador. U.S. cities on the list include New York, Miami, Orlando, Los Angeles and Washington; also include is a flight from Bogota to Toronto, Canada.
