Around Markerville, Alberta

Historic Markerville is located in central Alberta.  It was established in 1888 by Icelandic settlers and became a thriving agricultural community, although today there are only a few dozen residents remaining.

We’ve previously featured the town’s Lutheran church, a provincial historic site, and a Tractor pull that was being held when I visited it.  Today I thought I’d share a few interesting sights from the town.

As you enter Markerville you see this monument to agriculture and the residents who founded the community.

Those residents that remain in the town take pride in their homes and yards.  Several go out of their way to make their places appeal to visitors.

Historic Fensala Hall was built in 1904.  It is the longest operating hall in Alberta and still is used for weddings, community events and the like.
