Portugal revives Iberia’s oldest car race

Portugal will see a revived road race, Cartrack Figueira da Foz–Estoril, for pre-war cars this year, for the first time since 2015, and for the first time since 1902 it will end at its original planned destination.

The two-day 200km+ run from Figueira da Foz on the coast of central Portugal to  and Estoril, on the coast in the town of Cascais west of Lisbon will take place October 8th and 9th, and is open to cars made before 1939. It’s a joint project of the Museu do Caramulo, the Pre-War Racers Portugal club and the Portuguese Antique Automobile Club.

Last-minute changes in 1902 diverted the race to end in Lisbon; this year’s revival is the first time the race will actually reach the destination it’s named for.

The museum says the pre-war era “is a special era that deserves to be seen and celebrated” and, therefore, “this event is now more important than ever, despite there being more and more events, competitions and opportunities for classic car owners can participate and take advantage of their vehicles”.
