Where Gumbo Was #433
Congratulations goes to George G for finding Gumbo at Petit-Rocher in New Brunswick, Canada.
Petit-Rocher was founded in 1797 by three Acadian settlers from Bathurst. The were sons of deported Acadians. It is said they landed on a little rock there that’s how the village got its name.
It’s current population of over 1900 meets the requirements for a town, but they haven’t asked for that designation. It has a great location on the Bay of Chaleur and the industrial park has access to the Halifax-Montreal rail line, near the Belledune National Port and the Bathurst Airport. Their Latin slogan for the village is “Ascencio Populi” (The Ascension of the People) and it has prided itself on continuously building a better way of life for residents.
This year, 17 paintings were created at the municipal wharf on concrete facades by local artists. They depict the wharf, the area and history of what you are seeing. It’s attracted tourists from all over and it’s quite special.
