Breeze Airways, one of two new U.S. carriers this year, must be feeling the breeze under its wings: It’s just added another twenty planes to its order for Airbus A220s.
The order comes as the first of its new planes has rolled out of the Airbus paintshop in Breeze colors. That’s founder and CEO David Neeleman posing with it above. The new order comes on top of an order for 60 planes. The airline started service in May, and is currently flying leased Embraer E195s.
Breeze’s business plan is to provide non-stop service to underserved airports and areas whose service has been limited to one-class small regional jets. The A220s will include business-class sections as well as coach. Neeleman has said that the airline can break even with planes only half full.
The A220 order will be arriving at about one plane a month, and will initially be assigned to routes over two hours; as more arrive, the Embraers will be phased out.
