Radovljica’s Medieval Old Town, Slovenia

We spent several pleasant days visiting the Lake Bled / Julian Alps region of Slovenia.  One afternoon we drove from Bled to the nearby town of Radovlijica.  Our main purpose was to visit the surprisingly interesting Bee-keeping museum in magnificent Radovlijica Manor.  On our journey to the museum we discovered a charming historic town.

Radovljica has one of the best preserved old town sections in Slovenia, centered in Linhart square (named after Radovljica native Anton Linhart, a Slovenian playright),  The square has many colorful buildings dating to the 14th and 15th century.

It’s an appealing place, with well-preserved Medieval architecture and interesting frescoes.  There’s a variety of museums, galleries, shops and cafes making it easy to spend several hours wandering around.

Last Saturday’s One Clue Mystery photo was taken from Linhart square (see photo below).  Congratulations to Professor Abe and George G, who recognized where we were!

In the square there’s a monument and fountain in memory of Josipina Hočevar, a local entrepeneur and benefactor.  In the photo below, a school-boy holds a plaque with Josipina depicted on it.

There are many events centered in Radovljica’s old town, including summer concerts and street theatre performances, and in the winter Christmas decorations and a magnificent Christmas tree.

There’s also the Gothic church of St Peter and its associated church buildings….

The building with the arcaded courtyard south of the Parish Church of St Peter’s is the rectory, where exhibitions are sometimes held.

The largest building in the Linhart Square is Radovlijica Manor, wherein you’ll find the Apiculture Museum.

A small shop seems to have been visited by extraterrestrials, or so their display seems to indicate.

We enjoyed our afternoon in Radovlijica!  I’d go back there for a longer visit if I ever get back to Slovenia.
