Times Square New Year Eve: Back with Vax

New Years’ Eve in Times Square, a celebration known throughout the world and shunned by most New Yorkers, will be back this year after last year’s Covid cancellation, but it will be open only to those who are fully vaxed and prepared to freeze.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced this week that the full-scale party in the streets that precedes the dropping of a crystal ball to mark midnight is on, saying “We want to welcome all those hundreds of thousands of folks, but everyone needs to be vaccinated. Join the crowd, join the joy, join a historic moment as New York City provides further evidence to the world that we are 100% back.”

But also be prepared to show proof of vaccination, which will be checked at entrances into the blocked off area, and to stay once you’re there: for security reasons, once in, you’re in until after midnight. New Yorkers tend to leave it to visitors. And, by the way, the forecast for that night is 24°F
