American Airlines locks out AwardWallet

American Airlines has forbidden AwardWallet, the popular loyalty tracking program, from tracking or displaying balances and other information in the AAdvantage loyalty program, an action it took once before, in 2011.

So far, American has not made any public statement explaining its action, which breaks an August 2013 agreement between the two companies, in which American lauded the tracking program: “American Airlines is continually looking for new ways to enhance the experience for our most valued customers. We have worked closely with AwardWallet to design an offering that meets our security requirements, while offering our customers a one-stop shop for tracking all of their loyalty affiliations, including AAdvantage.”

The cutoff has become an instant hot topic on frequent flier webpages and forums, and a change.org petition to American has been circulating.

While American has worked with Award Wallet for the past eight years with a direct connection, AwardWallet updates other airline, hotel and other loyalty programs by logging on to their websites with credentials supplied by users. Delta and United have barred that access for years, but users have been able to keep their accounts updated by emailing monthly statements from the airlines to AwardWallet. However, AwardWallet says it will not be able to do that with American because American will not permit it.
