Island of Rab, Croatia

With unexpected time off in late autumn from my US Army work in Germany, I asked our German friends at the local dry cleaners for a recommendation.  They said Rab, Croatia was a wonderful spot, so we packed our bags, hopped in the car, got on the Autobahn and headed to the Dalmatian Coast.  Being prior to GPS devices in Europe, we grabbed an armful of paper road maps and took off.

The Dalmatian Coast drive was a beautiful excursion chock-full of gorgeous scenery.  To get to the island, you have to take the car ferry from the port of Stinica.  A short wait in line and a short ferry ride got us easily to Rab.  However, what we didn’t expect was that most all hotels were closed for the season or completely booked with bus tours.  We finally found what appeared to be the last room on the island which was a penthouse suite in the old city of Rab.  We took it right away since I believe the ferry stopped operating for the night.  The price was extremely reasonable and the view of the old cityfrom the roomwas spectacular.

Rab View of Adriatic Sea

Local seafood cuisine was fantastic, shopping in the old city was crammed with local crafts, and theviews of the Adriatic were stunning. The were a number of city towers, but it seemed the beautifulCathedral of the Assumption of Marydominated the others.
