Avelo plans to double fleet, routes

Avelo, one of 2021’s U.S. start-up airlines, has big plans for 2022—or, at least, big plans for its size, which is still quite small.

The airline, which operates almost as two separate carriers from bases at Burbank Airport in the Los Angeles area and Tweed-New Haven Airport in Connecticut, will expand its fleet of six 737s to fifteen by the end of the year, financing the expansion with an additional $42 million in investments from Morgan Stanley and others.

With the added jets, the airline expects to double its network from 19 cities to “at least 40” within the year. The added planes will also enable it to increase frequencies on some routes.

Unlike the other major 2021 startup, Breeze, which has long-distance ambitions, Avelo is so far sticking to its plan of flying popular leisure routes from a limited number of independent hubs.
