Are you ready for this? Generation X, the children born between 1965 and 1979, are now officially ready the museum. Yes, the history museum.
You may think you’re still young, but even in your 40s and approaching 50s, you’ve been labeled “the last generation to have had an analog childhood.” At the Illinois State Museum, this October, you’ll be studied, described and explained in an exhibit, “Growing Up X.”
But don’t feel bad about it: Erika Holst, the museum’s Curator of History (yes, history) says “We think it’s time Gen X got some love.” She added “We want to dig into the experience of being a child in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. How did growing up adapting to new technology, often unsupervised, in the shadow of the Cold War, Reaganomics, Just Say No and the AIDS crisis shape this generation of people who are now coming into their own in middle age?”
Oh, and she’d like to borrow some of your gear: she’s looking for Gen Xers to lend the museum items such as portable cassette players and inline skates. There’s also an online survey to help shape the exhibit.
